Block-Based Mentoring in Milwaukee, WI
We don't wait for youth to come to us — we show up where they are. Our Block-Based Program brings small-group mentoring, block clubs, and community events to the neighborhoods we serve across Milwaukee.
Mentoring that starts on the block.
Unite the Block Corp's Block-Based Program is a neighborhood-rooted mentoring model: trained adult mentors lead small groups of youth on the very blocks where they live. We partner with families, schools, churches, block clubs, and neighborhood leaders to create safe, consistent spaces where young people can learn, grow, and be heard.
Sessions blend one-to-one check-ins, group activities, life-skills workshops, and community projects. One week might be a financial literacy game, the next a neighborhood cleanup, a basketball tournament, a book bag giveaway, or a cookout that brings the whole block together. Every activity is designed to build trust, confidence, and connection.
How a block group works
- 1
Map the Block
We identify a neighborhood, build trust with residents, and connect with parents, schools, and local leaders to understand its strengths and needs.
- 2
Recruit Mentors
We train mentors from the community — adults who know the block, its culture, and its young people. Background checks and orientation are provided.
- 3
Launch a Cohort
A small group of youth meets weekly with two or more mentors at a safe, familiar location — a park, a community room, a church basement, or a front porch.
- 4
Grow Together
Cohorts stay connected through weekly sessions, monthly block events, family gatherings, and one-to-one mentoring matches that form naturally over time.
What youth gain
Block-based mentoring gives young people a sense of belonging on their own block. Youth build relationships with caring adults, develop daily living skills, and participate in activities that strengthen their neighborhood.
- ✓ A safe, consistent space to belong
- ✓ Caring adults who know their name and block
- ✓ Daily living and leadership skills
- ✓ Opportunities to give back to their neighborhood
What blocks gain
When mentors and youth show up consistently, the whole block benefits. Families connect, neighbors get involved, and a culture of care and accountability begins to grow — one young person, one relationship, one event at a time.
- ✓ Stronger block-level relationships
- ✓ Youth-led neighborhood projects
- ✓ Safer, more connected streets
- ✓ Partnerships with local schools and businesses
Why block-based mentoring matters
Real change happens where people live. By mentoring on the block, we remove transportation barriers, honor neighborhood identity, and create a web of support that extends far beyond a single match. Stronger blocks mean stronger kids, stronger families, and a stronger Milwaukee.
